Australia vs Srilanka ICC Champions Trophy 2013 Match

Australia vs Srilanka

Result Update: Srilanka wins and enters the semi finals against India

Australia meets Srilanka in the last group match which will be a virtual quarter final. England defeated New Zealand and qualified for the semis along with India and South Africa from the other group. Australia has to beat Srilanka and improve its net run rate above New Zealand to qualify. That looks tough! Srilanka has an easier way to qualify. They just need to win today and that is it! That makes a do or die match for both the teams! Indian TV viewers can enjoy this thrilling match on Star Cricket and Star Sports 2 channels.

Australia are -0.96 whereas New Zealand are +0.78 in terms of net run rate. So a long way to go for Australia apart from a must win today. Net run rate is not a concern for Srilanka if they win. Because they will then have four points (one more than New Zealand).

Australia as a team has been considered legendary in last one or two decades in ICC events. But this time they have been completely disappointing. None of their players have played upto their potential. Bailey, the acting captain has batted well. Some of the other batsmen have been good in patches none of them played match winning knocks.

Bowling for Australia still looks good. A spirited peformance from McKay or Starc can pull out a big win for Australia. Shane Watson is the key player for the team who hasn't clicked so far in this competition. If it is his day today, Australia may go home with a win.

Srilanka looked a completely different outfit against England. After couple of losses in warm up games and a loss against New Zealand in the group match, they were badly looking for a win. And that came against the strong team of England. Chasing a target of 295, Srilankan batsmen looked pretty confident. Dilshan and Jayawardene provided a good support to Sangakkara who scored a big ton. Kulasekara's innings was the turning point when he smashed a lot of runs as a pinch hitter.

Lasith Malinga would be a key for Srilanka today with his unplayable yorkers. Eranga has got few wickets but at times he has been expensive. Herath can trouble the Australians with his spins. Mathews has to click with his bat as well as the ball.

Another must win match in this last edition of Champions Trophy and the last match from the group stage. Then we would enter the much awaited knock out stage. The team finishing second in Group A will face India in the semi final and England will face South Africa in the other semi final.
